Chelsea are reportedly in serious talks to bring in highly-rated German centre-back Karim Coulibaly from Werder Bremen next summer, according to reports via BILD and Metro.
Who Is Karim Coulibaly?
The 18-year-old has risen through the ranks in Germany, progressing through Bramfelder SV, HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst and Hamburger SV before breaking into Werder Bremen’s first team. He made his senior debut as a late substitute against Eintracht Frankfurt last August and hasn’t looked back since — starting 20 Bundesliga matches this campaign despite Bremen sitting dangerously close to the relegation zone in 17th place.
Towering at 6ft 3in, Coulibaly has been one of the rare bright spots in an otherwise disappointing season under Daniel Thioune and predecessor Horst Steffen.
The Transfer Race
Chelsea face stiff competition. Newcastle United have reportedly held talks, while Napoli and Marseille have also declared concrete interest. With most of Europe’s top clubs making enquiries, the Blues are said to be one of very few sides with genuine intent — and crucially, no issue meeting Bremen’s £39m asking price. A formal offer is yet to be submitted, but the seriousness of Chelsea’s interest appears well beyond speculative.
Do Chelsea Actually Need Him?
That’s the real question. The Blues already possess an enviable defensive pipeline. Josh Acheampong is now fully embedded in the first team, Mamadou Sarr has returned from his Strasbourg loan with promise, and Colombian teenager Deinner Ordóñez is signed in principle from Independiente del Valle.
