Cincinnati Reds vs Miami Marlins – April 9, 2026

Last night the Marlins were able to pick up their first win of the series as they jumped on Brady Singer early and held on for a 7-4 victory. Miami will try to salvage a split this afternoon, while the Cincinnati Reds are hoping to pick up a series win after they grabbed the first two games of the 4-game set. Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 12:10pm ET.

Starting Lineups

Starting Pitchers

Rhett Lowder

We’re still just eight starts into the big league career for Lowder but he’s been about as good as anyone ever has through that number of starts when it comes to preventing runs. He’s given up just three extra-base hits in his eight starts against big league hitters.

His platoon splits are a bit weird. Neither righties or lefties hit for average or for power. Right-handed hitters do have the advantage in average, but even as the “good” side against him they are hitting just .226 so far. The big difference comes in how often each group walks. Righties pretty much don’t walk, but left-handed hitters are walking as often as a prime Joey Votto did when they face Lowder.

Max Meyer

The #3 overall draft pick back in 2020, Meyer made his debut in 2022 but exited his second game in the big leagues with an elbow injury and underwent Tommy John surgery. Since his return in 2024 he hasn’t quite been the same – though he did strike out 14 Reds a little less than a year ago. Two months later he needed surgery on his hip and he missed the final 3+ months of the season.

Last season Meyer was much better at home, where his ERA was nearly two runs lower. He gave up significantly more home runs in Miami, but he rarely walked anyone and had a ton of strikeouts at home. His platoon splits are pretty big. Left-handed hitters struggle to hit for average and they don’t draw walks against him while hitting for moderate power when they did get hits. Right-handed hitters have hit for a high average against him and hit for a lot of power.

News and Notes

Can the P.J. Higgins winning streak continue?

Catching today is P.J. Higgins. The 32-year-old will be making his first appearance in a big league game since October 5th of 2022 when he was with the Chicago Cubs. He went 1-3 with a double, two walks, three runs, and three runs batted in. Against the Reds. That game marked the 7th game in a row in which he appeared that his team won (and three were against Cincinnati). Can today make it eight in a row?

The Cincinnati Reds have officially released the new City Connect uniforms

All red jerseys. All red pants. The jersey’s have a light pinstripe and on the sleeve that doesn’t have the Kroger advertisement is a “Cincy” patch, with Cincy in black font over top of an image of Tyler Davidson Fountain from Fountain Square.

The all red uniforms will be worn for home games on Saturday’s throughout the season. The all black City Connect uniforms will continue to be worn for home games on Friday night.

Down on the Farm

Last night the Chattanooga Lookouts won once again, moving to 5-0 on the season. It’s the best start by a Reds Double-A affiliate since at least 2005, which is the furthest back MiLB’s game log database goes. Over at RedsMinorLeagues.com I wrote about that and more when looking back at how the farm performed on Wednesday.
