CMLL Highlights: Taya’s reaction to bald Johnny, #1 contender for Mercedes, new champion, more!

It was a newsy weekend for CMLL. Johnny Consejo lost his hair, Claudio Castagnoli retained the heavyweight strap, Mercedes Moné has a #1 contender for the women’s world title, and a new champion was crowned on the FantasticaMania tour in NJPW.

Pour one out for Johnny’s luxurious locks. He lost hair versus hair (recap) to Angel de Oro in Arena Mexico on Friday night (Feb. 27, 2026). Johnny’s arrogance was his downfall. Instead of a pin off a groin kick and Moonlight Drive, he showboated on Starship Pain. Angel sprang up to knock Johnny off the corner onto the ropes. Angel executed a Mexican Destroyer off the ropes and followed for a frog splash to win. Johnny was shaved bald. The hair cut might be a blessing in disguise. Johnny was looking a little like Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray’s character in Kingpin) in this match.

Johnny was distraught backstage about losing his beautiful hair.

At least Johnny has the loving support of his wife. Taya Valkyrie finds bald Johnny hotter than ever. She also compared him to a, “badass, ninja, Bond villain.”

When one door closes, another door opens. Don Callis praised Johnny and himself. Could this new look lead to an invitation to the Family?

Johnny was in action on Saturday night (Feb. 28, 2026) in Mexico City for a three-way against Angel and Esfinge. CMLL updated the match graphic to show Johnny Calvo.

Unfortunately for Johnny, the result was the same. Angel was victorious after a Mexican Destroyer and a frog splash.

Claudio Castagnoli handled business to retain the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship in a three-way against Akuma and Euforia. It was no walk in the park for Claudio. Akuma took him for a ride on the giant swing. Claudio was crafty in the end. He pulled referee Aubrey Edwards in front as a distraction. Claudio booted Akuma, then he followed up with the giant swing and the Neutralizer for victory.

Mercedes Moné is set to defend the CMLL Women’s World Championship in Arena Mexico on Friday, March 6. CMLL put together a mini tournament to determine the next challenger. Round one was a tag team contest. Persephone and Olympia prevailed over Tessa Blanchard and Zeuxis. Olympia executed a tower of doom suplex. Instead of allowing Persephone to secure the win on a moonsault, Olympia took the glory for herself to pin Zeuxis off a fireman’s carry slam.

The winners advanced to a singles battle. This time, Persephone was the one with a trick up her sleeve. On the finish, Persephone faked an eye injury. As the referee checked out the damage, Olympia posed for the crowd. That was her mistake. Persephone grabbed Olympia from behind to hit the Razor’s Edge to win. Persephone now has a date with Mercedes to bring home the title to CMLL.

The replay for Friday night’s event is available worldwide through the CMLL YouTube monthly subscription (Campeón Mundial and Leyenda levels). Outside Mexico, the show is also available through TrillerTV with English commentary.

Several luchadores were in Japan for FantasticaMania in NJPW. The tour closed with a pair of title bouts, one of which resulted in a new champion. Averno dethroned Atlantis Jr. to win the World Historic Light Heavyweight Championship. Atlantis Jr. held that title for 1,118 days.

Mistico retained the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship over Soberano Jr.

Last on the list is Mascara Dorada climbing high for a moonsault.
