Cody Rhodes is officially heading back to WWE television after being taken out in brutal fashion by Randy Orton, and his return date has now been revealed.
In an update following Orton’s vicious assault earlier this month, WWE confirmed that Rhodes will return on the March 27 episode of SmackDown. The Undisputed WWE Champion has been off television since the March 13 attack, where Orton left him bloodied and requiring medical attention.
Rhodes did not appear on the March 19 episode, fueling speculation about when he would make his comeback. Now, with his return locked in, the road to WrestleMania 42 is expected to heat up quickly as tensions between Rhodes and Orton continue to build.
Orton recently addressed his actions during the March 16 episode of RAW while speaking with Michael Cole, offering insight into his mindset after turning on Rhodes.
“I’m a killer.”
He also delivered a line that appeared to take direct aim at Rhodes’ legacy and family history in wrestling.
“Wrestling has more than one royal family.”
Rhodes is currently scheduled to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Orton at WrestleMania 42, making his March 27 SmackDown return a key moment in the buildup to their title match. After being sidelined following the attack, his return could signal the next major escalation between the two longtime rivals.
