Conor Benn HITS BACK: I don’t owe Matchroom anything

Conor Benn insists he doesn’t owe former promotional team Matchroom anything following his switch to Zuffa Boxing.

Benn stunned the boxing world last month by leaving Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom for Dana White’s Zuffa in a one-fight deal reportedly worth $15m.

The 29-year-old has received wide criticism for the move, particularly after Hearn fiercely backed him following two failed drug tests, which cancelled the original bout with Chris Eubank Jr, which was meant to have taken place in October 2022.

Hearn, who claims he leant ‘The Destroyer’ “hundreds of thousands of pounds” during the testing period, says his former charge refused a phone call with him after deciding to move to Zuffa.

Despite Hearn’s disapproval of the way Benn handled the situation, the Ilford man says he doesn’t owe his former team anything.

“No I don’t [feel like I owe Matchroom anything],” he told talkSPORT.

“I don’t feel like I owe anybody anything.

“I owe my family, I owe my son a good life, a blessed life.

“I owe opening doors for my son that no one else can open.

“That’s my responsibility. He is my legacy.

“Not just my son, my daughter.

“That is my legacy, everything else is just noise.

“I really use my dad’s career as a benchmark, because who checks for my dad now?

“Who pays for my dad’s bills now?”

Benn makes his debut under the Zuffa banner on April 11 when he faces former super lightweight world champion, Regis Prograis in a 150 pound catchweight bout on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s comeback against Arslanbek Makhmudov at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The 29-year-old returns to the site of his two bouts with Eubank Jr, the second of which he won by unanimous decision in November after suffering a first professional defeat to the Brighton man last April.

Benn’s two clashes with Eubank Jr were contested at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds, but ’The Destroyer’ says his goal remains to win a world title at welterweight and is targeting a showdown with WBC champion, Ryan Garcia.

“I want the WBC world title this year,” he added.

“That is a must.

“It’s almost guaranteed that I fight for the world title at the end of the year, providing I do what I need to do [on] April 11.”
