Cricketers who took fewest matches to lead

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced an 18-member Indian squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, which is set to begin on June 20. Notably, Shubman Gill has been named the new captain of the Indian Test team for the tour after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format earlier this month.

This will mean that Gill will lead India in his 33rd Test. The 25-year-old cricketer has so far scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 which includes five centuries and seven half-centuries in 32 matches.

The right-handed batter has shown promise since his early cricketing days and served as the vice-captain of the India U-19 team during the 2018 World Cup. Gill made his First-Class debut for Punjab in 2017 and impressed with a half-century and a century in his first match. He made his Test debut against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2020.
