Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a big setback just days before IPL 2026 begins, with Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Ellis was expected to play a key role for CSK, especially in the death overs. His absence leaves a clear gap in an area where the team was already under pressure.
The pacer has not recovered in time for the tournament. He has taken 19 wickets in his IPL career, and played only one match for CSK in the 2025 season.
Bowling Concerns Grow
CSK’s pace attack now looks thin in the final overs. Their overseas fast-bowling options include Matt Henry, Zak Foulkes, and Jamie Overton.
However, none of these bowlers are known as specialist death-over experts. This makes CSK’s bowling plans more uncertain going into the new season.
The situation became tougher after Matheesha Pathirana moved to Kolkata Knight Riders. He was CSK’s main death bowler in recent seasons.
CSK also missed the chance to sign Blessing Muzarabani, who joined KKR as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman. That move has further limited their options.
The team’s bowling depth has already taken a hit due to major squad changes. CSK traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals to bring in Sanju Samson.
While Samson strengthens the batting, the bowling unit now looks less experienced and slightly unbalanced.
CSK CEO K.S. Viswanathan admitted the concern. “It is a big blow for us. Ellis is a crucial bowler, especially in the death overs. We are looking at replacements,” he said.
CSK will now have to find a quick replacement or trust their current bowlers to step up in pressure situations.
The five-time champions are coming off a last-place finish last season. They were hoping Ellis would help fix their death-bowling issues this year.
Instead, they now face another challenge before even playing their first match.
CSK will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
