CSK star named New Zealand captain for limited-overs series in Sri Lanka

He didn’t get too many opportunities to play for CSK but has been with them for a while in the league.

A Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player has been named the captain of New Zealand for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka. He didn’t get too many opportunities to play for CSK but has been with them for a while in the league.

Mitchell Santner, the left-arm spinner of New Zealand, will lead the Kiwis in their upcoming limited-overs assignment in a fresh move. Their previous captain, Kane Williamson, relinquished the captaincy from white-ball formats earlier this year, and they have named Santner an interim captain.

A decision on a full-time captain will be taken later, for they have yet to name their successor to Kane Williamson. Several players from the current Test side playing in India have been rested to prepare for the red-ball rubber against England at home after an away tour against Sri Lanka.

However, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Will Young, and Ish Sodhi are among the common players in both squads. Jacob Duffy and Michael Bracewell are other players in the Test team and white-ball squads for the Sri Lanka tour.

Nathan Smith and Mitch Hay receive maiden call-ups

Meanwhile, Nathan Smith, the bowling all-rounder, and Mitch Hay, the wicketkeeper batter, have received maiden call-ups on the back of strong performances in the domestic arena. In fact, Smith was named Men’s Domestic Player of the Year in March earlier.

Among experienced players is Lockie Ferguson, who will lead an inexperienced pace attack on the tour, while other pacers in the side are Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes. The pace-bowling all-rounders are Nathan Smith and Josh Clarkson, who are equally capable with both bat and ball.

The spin attack has ample quality; Ish Sodhi, who has played 51 ODIs and 117 T20Is, will be part of the squad along with the captain Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell. Glenn Phillips is also a handy spinner and will chip in with a few overs on turning Sri Lankan decks.

The team will look to prepare for the upcoming Champions Trophy in February next year. The Sri Lanka tour will kick off with a two-match T20I series on November 9 followed by a three-match ODI rubber.
