NHL Rumors: Stars GM Jim Nill Wants To Keep Jason Robertson Long-Term
EJ Hradek: “Before I let you, I’m gonna ask you. I mean, all you guys from a managing standpoint, you’re always looking at your roster, your contracts. Jason Robertson is a guy whose contract is coming up. He’s got one more year of RFA status, and it can be a UFA. What kind of conversations can you or do you have with someone like that, as you kind of lead forward, because the cap is going up, but still, there’s only a limited amount of room.”
Jim Nill: “Yeah, no. We started discussions with Jason last summer, so we’ve kept in touch, and in the end, we decided, let’s table this. Let’s go have a good year, let’s have a good playoff, and we’ll make this work. He’s a big part of our team. He’s one of the leading scorers in the league, and he’s really in the prime of his career. He’s a big part of our team. So a priority for us is to get him signed this summer and move on.”
NHLRumors.com Note: Everyone was making a big deal about Robertson’s status, trying to trade him to this team or that team, given the speculation and maybe some “wondering” about whether the Stars could get him under the cap. We know the Dallas Stars traded for Mikko Rantanen at last year’s trade deadline and then signed him to an eight-year contract at $12 million AAV.
NHL Rumors: The Dallas Stars Turn Their Attention to Jason Robertson
Throughout the summer and into the season, the word was that the Dallas weren’t going to pay him as much as they were paying Rantanen, and he was looking for more. Stars GM Jim Nill has been adamant about signing Jason Robertson despite the constant speculation.
The lines of communication have been open and remain open. Nill’s goal is to keep Robertson with the Dallas Stars for the next decade. Robertson is viewed as a big part of their organization that can bring the Stanley Cup to Dallas.
