Bills cornerback Darius Slay has sent a strong message on his NFL future
The Buffalo Bills have been active to begin the offseason. After another early exit in the playoffs, the Bills have revamped both their coaching staff and their roster. With the first wave of free agency in the books, one of the more overlooked question marks in Buffalo right now revolves around veteran cornerback Darius Slay.
After he was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers in December, Slay was quickly claimed by the Bills. However, he never reported to his new team, as he was reportedly contemplating retirement. Considering how Buffalo never released him, Slay is still a member of the team, but it doesn’t sound like he has any intention of playing for them in the future.
Darius Slay Drops Truth Bomb on NFL Future
After winning Super Bowl LIX with the Philadelphia Eagles, Slay signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Steelers in free agency. As part of a revamped secondary, Slay figured to be set for a big role, and while he was, his play declined to the point where he was removed from the starting lineup before his eventual release.
It seemed like Slay wanted a chance to compete with a true Super Bowl contender, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see the Bills claim him. In a surprising turn of events, though, Slay refused to suit up for Buffalo. It seemed like retirement was on the table for Slay this offseason, as his decision not to play for the Bills indicated his playing days were over.
If Slay were to want to return to the NFL, though, Buffalo still has his rights, as it never released him after claiming him. Slay doesn’t seem interested in playing for them, or 30 other teams across the league, though. Per the man himself, Slay is only going to play in 2026 if he does so as a member of the Eagles.
“No team can call me but the Eagles. No team can call me, everybody knows,” Slay said in a clip he reposted on X.
What Should the Bills Do with Darius Slay?

What the future holds for Slay is unknown. It remains to be seen if the Eagles would even want to bring him back to town, as they have already signed a pair of cornerbacks (Riq Woolen and Jonathan Jones) in free agency. Beyond that, Slay is still a member of the Bills, meaning they’d either have to release Slay or trade him to Philadelphia.
Considering how things unfolded with Slay in Buffalo, the team isn’t necessarily guaranteed to grant him any favors moving forward. Philly could trade for him, but giving up any sort of draft capital for a guy who is a big question mark right now doesn’t really make much sense. Regardless, it looks like Slay’s debut with the Bills is never going to happen, with the only intrigue surrounding his status now revolving around whether or not he finds his way back to the Eagles.
