Jets GM Darren Mougey met with the media at the owners meetings in Arizona and fielded a variety of questions including of course, those regarding quarterback Ty Simpson.
The Jets held a private workout with Simpson just a few days ago with fans wondering if the Alabama signal caller will be an option for Mougey in the top two rounds of the draft. Mougey was brief, but said that “It was good. It was a good visit with Ty and we really enjoyed our time down there. We went to dinner, had a workout with him and it was good”.
Also pressed on his team’s need to add a wide receiver, Mougey said “I feel good about the wide receiver room, obviously getting Garrett (Wilson) back and healthy will be big for us, seeing AD Mitchell and Isaiah and Arian, having those guys take the next step and continue to grow”.
And with the NFL draft just around the corner, Mougey was asked if the Jets are close to a decision on who they’ll take with the second overall pick and said he “I feel good about where we are in the process but there’s still a lot of work to be done and we’ll get back to Jersey the week and we’ll fire up our meetings” as the team looks to hone in in one player to take after the Raiders presumably select quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the top pick.
With running back Breece Hall getting the franchise tag earlier this offseason, Mougey was asked where the team is in terms of working out a long-term deal. Mougey said that things are “in a good place” with the back and he hopes to turn his focus to Hall once the NFL draft wraps up.
