December 6, 2025 — And now, the wait

The United States junior women’s national team now sits perfect in the 2025 FIH Junior Women’s World Cup, with three wins in three matches. The team is now the pool winner in Group F and has one of the six guaranteed slots in the quarterfinal round for pool winners in this tournament.

The U.S. also wakes up this morning as a top-four seed for the quarterfinal round. Yup, top four. Depending on results today, the U.S. will avoid some of the teams who have been scoring profligately in this tournament when the quarterfinals begin on Monday.

As of the close of play yesterday, here are the top eight seeds:

There is, however, the small matter of the final-day fixtures. Note that three of the teams in this chart — Australia, Argentina, and China — have one more game to play each. Only Australia can pull level with the United States, Holland, and Germany in terms of standings points.

If Australia beats Scotland by more than three goals today in their final group-phase game, the junior Hockeyroos will slot into third place in this table on goal differential and push the United States into fourth. That would mean that the United States would likely have to play either Argentina (who play Wales today) or China (who take on South Africa).

There is a wild-card today when it comes to the standings, and that’s England. The Lions are in second place in Pool D on goal difference, and if they are able to win today over Austria, they will have seven points in the standings, and will have to make up eight goals in goal differential in order to make the quarterfinal round.

Break out the slide rules, people. This is going to get interesting.
