Host: “So Jim, is there anybody you see making a big splash? Carolina kind of feels the last couple of years right there, falling always a little bit short. They did make their moves last year when it came to the trade deadline.
But what about the Detroit Red Wings? Many thought that they’d be fighting for a wild card spot, and they may be fighting for a wild card spot, but right now, they’re tucked away second in that Atlantic Division. Do you expect them to be aggressive between now and the trade deadline?”
Jim Biringer: “Yes, I think they’re going to be very aggressive between now and the trade deadline. And they might be a team in on (Artemi) Panarin. They have the picks. They have the prospects, They have the talent pool that can make that work with Panarin, because I think we all know heard the comments last year from Dylan Larkin about Steve Yzerman in the room and what happened and how they weren’t aggressive enough, and it hurt the morale.
NHL Rumors: Scouting SJ-LA, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Tampa Bay Lightning
I think Steve Yzerman understands that he has a playoff team right now, and he’s going to do what he can to get them in, and he isn’t afraid to sell future assets right now. I think Detroit’s going to be very active.
Carolina, for sure, is definitely in on Panarin. We’ll see if the Rangers and Hurricanes want to make another trade inside the division to help them bolster that roster.
But you look at Carolina, you look at Detroit, those teams, they know what it now has to take, especially Carolina. Carolina could use a guy like (Panarin) because goal scoring always runs right for them. In the playoffs, they run into a Florida team or Tampa team that can play and grind it out and make life difficult for you. Most recently, it’s been the Panthers twice, but you have a guy like Panarin there that can open some things up.
As for Detroit, I think they just need, you know, reunion with Kane and Panarin we saw in Chicago. It wasn’t that great in New York, because Kane was hurt. The hip was still an issue. Now, Patrick Kane looks like the old Patrick Kane. That’s a place you know to be flying under the radar again. Though does Steve Yzerman see it as a rental, or does he want a short-term deal out of it? That’s something I’m pondering myself.”
