Dinesh Karthik’s take on ‘greatest in Test’ debate

Dinesh Karthik made a return to Test cricket last week after 650 days against Bangladesh in the first test of the two-match Test series in Chennai. Pant’s knock of 109 played a crucial role as India beat Bangladesh by 280 runs on Sunday and secured a 1-0 lead in the series.

The century was an emotional one for Karthik, who played his first Test after December 2022, as he was put to rest due to a car accident. However among experts, the topic changed as Pant came to match the record of MS Dhoni for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper.

Former Indian cricketers such as Akash Chopra and Sanjay Manjrekar believe that Pant has now gone past former captain Dhoni, and has become the greatest for India in the format.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has called these comparisons as “unacceptable”. He urged the fans and experts to give more time to Pant and give time to him rather than jumping to “India’s best wicketkeeper” conclusions, since he has played only 34 Tests.

“It’s very unacceptable to say that he’s played 34 Tests and he’s already India’s greatest wicketkeeper batter. Let’s take time, let’s not jump to conclusions but definitely he’s on course for sure and he will finish as India’s greatest ever wicketkeeper,” he said.
