Dodgers Make Trade, Send Outfielder to Marlins

The Los Angeles Dodgers traded outfielder Esteury Ruiz to the Miami Marlins Monday afternoon, per MLB insider Francys Romero.

Who Did The Dodgers Acquire From The Marlins?

In exchange for Ruiz, the Marlins sent right-handed pitching prospect Adriano Marrero to the Dodgers. The 18-year-old was signed by the Marlins last January.

Marrero tossed 33 innings in the Dominican Summer League with 35 strikeouts.

The MLB offseason slowed down in recent weeks after a few big name free agents were taken off the board, including the best closer in baseball: Edwin Diaz.

Since the Dodgers signed Diaz to a three-year, $69 million deal, the defending champions have been quiet as have most other teams around the league. Things are expected to pick up as 2026 begins, and the Dodgers have now continued their offseason moves by trading Ruiz.

The outfielder’s role with the Dodgers was to provide depth for LA, playing 19 games in the big leagues last season. In 21 Major League at-bats, Ruiz slashed .190/.261/.333 with one home run, two runs batted in and a .594 OPS. The speedy outfielder also added four stolen bags to his 2025 stat line.

Ruiz spent most of his Dodgers tenure with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Ruiz averaged .304 with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs. He led the league with 63 stolen bases, marking the most steals in a single season in the Pacific Coast League since 1983.

Moreover, Ruiz recorded 62 of his 63 stolen bases while playing for OKC, setting a new single-season team record.

Ruiz and Ryan Ward were named 2025 Pacific Coast League All-Stars for their performance in the minors last season. Ruiz joined the Dodgers last April, when the Athletics sent the outfielder to LA. Now, he’ll begin the next chapter of his career in Miami.

Once the Ruiz trade is complete, the Dodgers will have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
