Cody Rhodes climbed to the top of the WWE mountain when he ended the 1,316-day title reign of Roman Reigns to become the new Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania 40. However, a former three-time World Champion believed that it should have been him, not Cody, to dethrone the Original Tribal Chief.
Which former World Champion believes he should have dethroned Roman Reigns instead of Cody Rhodes?
In a recent interview on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, current RAW star Drew McIntyre addressed his historic loss against Roman Reigns at WWE Clash at the Castle in 2022. The Scottish Warrior claimed that during the match, when Austin Theory came out to cash in his Money in the Bank contract, McIntyre should have pinned him to win the title, thereby also protecting The Bloodline and Roman Reigns.
“I think so. It’s weird, because you look at certain moments and in the moment when you’re living them you’re like this is ridiculous. We should have found a way out of this. Theory could have cashed in, and I could have pinned him because we had to protect The Bloodline and Roman at that time, that’s the top story in the company, the top character. And perhaps at that time, I was like, I just feel this is a bad move.”
Of course, fans all remember that night for the debut of Solo Sikoa on the main roster, who interfered and attacked Drew McIntyre. This gave Roman Reigns the opening to connect with a spear and defeat McIntyre in front of his home country of the United Kingdom.
Since then, McIntyre has gained a lot of success due to his high-profile feud with CM Punk in 2024. While the rivalry between Reigns and McIntyre was stellar, surely WWE fans would not mind revisiting this feud in the coming future. So we will have to wait and see if it happens under completely different circumstances next time.
