Durand Cup Derby in Kolkata canceled amid protests

East Bengal vs. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, which was supposed to take place on Sunday at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium during the Durand Cup group round, has been canceled. The PTI story claims that security concerns arose from the decision to call off the Derby, given the ongoing protests in Kolkata following the rape and killing of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College.

East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan Super Giant: Match details

The highly anticipated Durand Cup Group A match between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC has been postponed. The game was slated to start at 7:00 PM on August 18, 2024, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

Each team will receive one point as a result of the match being canceled. It is unlikely to have an impact on Mohun Bagan, though, given they have already advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals. Undoubtedly, the abandoned game has put East Bengal in a risky situation. With three games played and seven points, they are second in Group A. The top teams from each of the six groups will advance directly to the quarterfinals, where they will be joined by two of the top second-place teams across all groups, in accordance with the Durand Cup 2024 schedule.

On Saturday, the Durand Cup committee released a statement, “On behalf of the Durand Cup Organizing Committee, this is to regretfully inform you that the final Group A fixture between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC, scheduled to be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on August 18, 2024 at 7.00pm, stands abandoned.”

The ongoing protests affects Durand Cup

The report further stated that the Kolkata Police stated that it would be difficult to provide additional security for the significant Derby match, citing the demonstrations in Kolkata following the rape and death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The 2024 Durand Cup remaining matches are set to be moved to Jamshedpur because of the volatile atmosphere in Kolkata over the past several days.

“There are multiple options that the tournament committee is looking at. Jamshedpur is an option but there might be logistical issues. But nothing is confirmed at the moment and we are looking for the best solution,” Hindustan Times quoted a source as saying.
