The Philadelphia Eagles’ quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions in 2025 did not go as planned. They finished the season with an 11-6 record and qualified for the NFL playoffs, but were eliminated in the Wild Card round by the San Francisco 49ers, losing the game 23-19.
The team is looking to enhance its roster to reclaim its top position. A key free agent for them is tight end Dallas Goedert, who has been with the team for eight seasons. Over his tenure, he has recorded 4,676 yards and scored 35 touchdowns.
The Eagles have not yet reached an agreement on a new contract with Goedert, and Matt Johnson from Yahoo Sports believes that a deal is unlikely. For this reason, he thinks the team may consider Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku during NFL free agency.
“The Philadelphia Eagles bought themselves a little more time to decide on Dallas Goedert’s future with the club, but a split still seems to be the likeliest outcome,” Johnson wrote. “What became evident last season is that this offense needs more help at tight end, so that should come both via the NFL Draft and free agency. After spending nine years in Cleveland, Njoku likely wants to play for a Super Bowl contender with a quarterback he trusts to get him the football. With defenses focused on stopping Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown, all while having to account for Jalen Hurts’ athleticism, Njoku could have plenty of open looks in Philadelphia.”
Njoku has had a successful career with the Browns. He has spent nine seasons with the team, totaling 4,062 yards and 34 touchdowns. In 2023, he made the Pro Bowl, achieving 882 yards and six touchdowns.
The Eagles’ approach to the tight end position will remain a key storyline throughout the offseason. Whether the team ultimately retains Goedert, signs Njoku, or addresses the position in the draft, the decision will play an important role in shaping the offense around quarterback Jalen Hurts. Philadelphia will continue evaluating its roster during free agency and offseason workouts later this spring as it looks to position itself for another deep postseason run.
