Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has received a ban on bowling all competitions organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board following an independent review of his bowling action, which was reported during a County Championship game in September.

Shakib, playing for Surrey against Somerset, was noticed by the umpires for a suspected illegal bowling action. He was tested at Loughborough University earlier this month, which proved that his elbow extension exceeded the limit of 15 degrees set by the ECB regulations. The ECB then officially suspended him on December 10, the day they received the test results.

Suspension bars Shakib from bowling until he reassesses the action successfully, and if he is cleared at that reassessment, he will be required to show the independent observers that his elbow extension is within the permissible limits.

Shakib’s suspension comes despite a strong performance in the controversial match. He took nine wickets for Surrey in a standout return to county cricket, his first appearance in the league since the 2010-11 season. His bowling remains under scrutiny but the all-rounder’s impact on the field underscores why he is one of the sport’s most valuable players.

The suspension of Shakib is following the set procedures of ECB which aim to ensure fair play and the integrity of the game. For now, all eyes will be on the veteran as he works to rectify the issues with his actions and potentially reclaim his spot as one of cricket’s elite bowlers.
