A reunion of Rahul Dravid with Rajasthan Royals might just be possible, all thanks to a series of events which involve the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Sri Lankan Legend Kumar Sangakkara.
As per a report, ECB is exploring possibilities of appointing Sangakkara, who is currently serving as head coach and director of cricket for Rajasthan Royals, as their new white-ball coach. This development could make way for Rahul to take on a more important role with the Rajasthan Royals franchise.
If Kumar Sangakkara accepts England’s coaching position, Rajasthan Royals have to welcome back their former captain and coach, Rahul Dravid. There are reports that indicate that Dravid is the most leading name to take this vacancy and his return is highly predicted. Sangakkara has also recently talked regarding the rumour regarding his potential appointment as England’s white-ball coach. While confirming the fact that he has not been approached by the ECB, he left open the chance of taking up the role.
While Kumar Sangakkara taking up England’s offer still is under speculations, Sangakkara has expressed satisfaction with his current role at the Rajasthan Royals. He has enjoyed a 4-year tenure and built strong relations within the organisation. Sangakkara also has a positive relation with the managing director of England men’s cricket team, Rob Key. His association with England’s captain Jos Buttler could further influence ECB’s decision-making as Buttler also plays for Rajasthan Royals.
“Well, I know my name has been mentioned for some reason, but there has not been any approach as such. I think the England white-ball job is an exciting prospect for anyone, but there are so many good candidates out there. I am very happy at the moment. The Rajasthan Royals experience has been very fulfilling, and it has been a job I have really enjoyed over the last four years,” Sangakkara said.
The ECB has started the process of finding a replacement for Matthew Mott as the coach. While the search is ongoing, any type of shortlist for new candidates has not yet been finalised. A normal interview process will be held to select the most suitable person for the role.
