Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn’s ongoing feud with UFC CEO Dana White continued as he weighed in on Tom Aspinall’s current deal.
UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall made headlines out of the Octagon when it was announced that he had added Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn to his team. Hearn will serve in an advisory role in Aspinall’s camp and could be a key presence in future negotiations with the UFC.
As Aspinall continues to work his way back to the Octagon following multiple eye injuries, Hearn’s addition to his camp means he’s serious about a future return to Mixed Martial Arts. But Hearn and White have traded barbs for months as White enters the boxing world via his Zuffa Boxing promotion.
After taking a look at Aspinall’s alleged UFC contract, Hearn believes the UFC’s heavyweight champion is being significantly undervalued.
Eddie Hearn: Tom Aspinall ‘shouldn’t bother fighting’ under current UFC deal
In a recent interview with Pro Boxing Fans, Hearn scorched White and the UFC for Aspinall’s current earnings.
“I’m going to bite my tongue a little bit for now, but what I’ll tell you is his contract is a f—– disgrace,” Hearn said of Aspinall’s deal.
“I cannot believe the money he’s on when you look at the commercial revenue that his fight would generate against Alex Pereira, or Ciryl Gane in a rematch. And honestly, if I’m Tom Aspinall, I’m looking at that contract and…he shouldn’t bother [fighting]. By the time you’ve paid your tax and team, there’s no point in even fighting.
“Especially when you’ve had four operations after your eyes got gouged out.”
Aspinall’s first undisputed heavyweight title defense ended in a no-contest against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 last year. Alex Pereira and Gane will fight for the interim heavyweight title at UFC Freedom 250, as Aspinall continues to recover.
In the meantime, things between Hearn and White continue to ramp up, as future Aspinall negotiations could be extremely complicated.
