Together As One; England Ice Hockey And Scottish Ice Hockey vote in favour of historic merger with Ice Hockey UK
Member Clubs of England Ice Hockey and Scottish Ice Hockey have made a bold statement for the future of UK ice hockey, by voting in favour of merging with Ice Hockey UK (IHUK).
Both England and Scottish Ice Hockey held a General Meeting this evening, welcoming their Member Clubs to vote in favour of bringing the three organisations together as one. Members turned out in their numbers, with a significant majority of Member Clubs from both organisations voting in favour.
The outcome of the vote means that Ice Hockey UK will open in-depth discussions with England and Scottish Ice Hockey on bringing the sport together as one.
Henry Staelens, Chief Executive Officer at Ice Hockey UK and England Ice Hockey, commented, “This evening’s vote is a defining moment for UK ice hockey, and it has been a long time coming for many. EIH and SIH members have spoken clearly about the way they wish to see the sport developed and governed throughout the UK, and this is a significant step to achieving all of the opportunities that lie in front of us. By coming together as one, we will modernise and professionalise how the sport is run, unlock greater support for clubs and participants, and create a structure that allows ice hockey to thrive at every level. It’s exciting that we are all on this journey together.”
Duncan Hough, Chair of England Ice Hockey, said, “My sincere thanks goes to the England Ice Hockey member clubs who attended the General Meeting and cast their vote. The sport has been built on the hard work of so many brilliant people, and it is now our opportunity to deliver greater support and opportunity. The next phase of consultation will be crucial in shaping an organisation that truly delivers for players, officials, volunteers, clubs and everyone involved in the sport.”
John Colley, Chair of Scottish Ice Hockey, concluded, “The decision made by Scottish Ice Hockey’s member clubs is very much welcomed. I thank every single member who has engaged throughout, offering constructive debate and conversation that will help shape the sport moving forward.
“The vote provides a mandate to explore how a single governing body will better support clubs, volunteers and participants in Scotland, while ensuring Scottish interests are clearly represented. The consultation phase will be vital in shaping the detail of any future structure, and Scottish Ice Hockey will remain focused on representing the views of its members at every stage.”
