El Paso Chihuahuas Adopt New Copa Identity – Dutch Baseball Hangout

Through their socials and website, the El Paso Chihuahuas presented their new identity for the Copa de la Diversión. For the 2026 season (and further) the Chihuahuas will call themselves the Matachines.

The El Paso Matachines is a tribute to one of the most recognizable and meaningful cultural traditions of the Paso del Norte region. Matachines are sword dancers dressed in ritual attire called bouffon are a carnivalesque dancers performing a dance that emerged in Spain in the early 17th century, inspired by similar European traditions such as the moresca. The term danza de matachines refers to their characteristic dance and music. The dance was documented in the 1642 treatise Discursos sobre el arte del dançado by Juan de Esquivel Navarro. The tradition was imported into Latin American countries such as Mexico and Peru and into the Southwestern United States.

According to the Chihuahuas’ website, “the marketing and promotions team challenged themselves to reinvent what Copa de la Diversión can look like in El Paso,” said Chihuahuas President and General Manager Brad Taylor. “From that challenge, we sought to pay tribute to our culture, traditions, and community. Matachines perfectly capture the elements that bring our community together: faith, celebration, music, and dance. We are honored to represent this as our new Copa brand.”

The Matachines jersey is baby blue with black sleeves. On the front, the name Matachines is written with slightly underneath, the Matachines logo. The jersey is adorned with a special piping that runs up, around the neck, and down again. That same piping can also be found around the sleeves, also in red.

The cap comes in black with a lid that matches the color of the jersey, as do the button on top and the eyelets. On the front of the cap the Matachines logo is depicted. Unlike the jersey, the cap is not for sale yet. But since a variety of snapback caps cost between $40.00 and $45.00 already, expect the price for the on-field cap to be pretty steep.

The Matachines will make an appearance on the following dates:
Saturday, April 11 – 6:35 p.m. – vs. Albuquerque Isotopes
Tuesday, May 5 – 6:05 p.m. – vs. Tacoma Rainiers
Thursday, May 21 – 6:35 p.m. – vs. Round Rock Express
