One goal was all it took for Ellerton Club to silence arch-rivals Weymouth Wales in the quarter-finals of the Flow Prime Minister’s Cup semi-professional football tournament, played on Sunday night at Friendship Ground in Hothersal Turning, St Michael.
Not even the intermittent rain and a slippery outfield could stop what was arguably the largest crowd seen so far for this competition from witnessing the blockbuster contest between these dynamos of local football. Wales were left shell-shocked and unresponsive to a penalty scored by Ellerton captain Shakille Belle in the 51st minute, for the 1-0 win.
As a result, Ellerton will face the University of the West Indies (UWI) Blackbirds in the semi-finals, while Brittons Hill will meet Kickstart Rush for a chance to reach the final on November 30 and win $100 000.
The St George-based Ellerton, coached by Alvin Holder, played with passion and looked purposeful on the field. However, they had an early scare less than three minutes into the match when goalkeeper Jamar Brewster suffered a right shoulder injury after colliding with Wales skipper Hadan Holligan. Thankfully, Brewster recovered and continued playing, though he was occasionally seen nursing his shoulder. (ML)
