This has been an exciting game here at Trent Bridge, with Birmingham Phoenix Women coming out to win by 3 runs against Trent Rockets Women in the 9th match of The Hundred Women’s Competition.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Birmingham Phoenix set a competitive score of 139/3 for them from their hundred-ball limitless power. The innings were anchored by an intelligent display of batting from Ellyse Perry, who played a captain’s knock of 66 runs off just 34 balls, laced with 6 fours and 4 sixes. Perry’s aggressive yet controlled batting set the tone for Phoenix’s innings.
Sterre Kalis provided excellent support with an undefeated 48 runs off 42 balls to see that the team did not lose any momentum. Sophie Devine added 17 runs before she was trapped lbw by Alana King.
It has been a mixed day for Trent Rockets’ bowlers – one in which Heather Graham starred with 1 wicket for just 15 runs in her 20 balls. Alana King also chipped in with a wicket, going for 26 runs in her 20 balls.
Trent Rockets Women also replied well, getting off to a sedate start with the opening partnership. Bryony Smith made 23 before being caught by Perry off Katie Levick’s bowling. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt bashed 59 off 37 balls with 10 boundaries in what was a real charge. Despite her efforts, the Rockets fell 3 runs short of the target.
Charis Pavely contributed to stagnating the chase of the Rockets, picking 2 important wickets for 20 runs in her 20 balls. Katie Levick bowled well to return with 2 for 26. Ellyse Perry continued her all-round excellence by chipping in with 1 wicket for 10 runs in her 10 balls to seal Player of the Match, having done enough with the bat.
That was not without some defining moments in the match, right down to the very finish, quite dramatic itself, as Trent Rockets needed 4 runs off the last ball but could only manage a single. This win catapults Birmingham Phoenix higher up in the standings, showing the fans what the team can do under such circumstances.
