India have left out Rinku Singh from the T20I squad for the five match series in South Africa, a call that has surprised many fans after his calm finish in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan.
The selectors have brought in Washington Sundar instead. This shows the team wants more players who can bat and bowl, not just a specialist finisher in the lower order.
Former India all rounder Irfan Pathan said Rinku’s omission is linked to Hardik Pandya’s return. He explained that Rinku was unlucky but the decision was expected once Hardik was fit again.
He said, “Rinku Singh was not selected because Hardik Pandya returned to the side. Rinku is unfortunate, but this was obvious.”
Pathan also believes the squad picked for South Africa is very close to the group India will use for the 2026 T20 World Cup. He said this team is already 90 to 95 percent complete.
India enter this phase as defending T20 World Cup winners under Rohit Sharma. In T20Is, the leadership has now moved to Suryakumar Yadav, who continues to shape the new core.
What India Want for the Future
Pathan stressed the value of strong finishers and flexible options as India plan ahead. He said Hardik, along with other lower order hitters, will have a big say in whether India can win another title.
He said, “Hardik’s role will be crucial for Team India’s performance in the World Cup. Hardik and the other finishers will have to play key roles.”
He also pointed to key choices in the bowling mix. India must decide how to combine their pacers and spinners. Names like Jasprit Bumrah, Shivam Dube and Hardik could line up with Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy in different conditions.
The message from the selection table is clear. India want multi dimensional cricketers who offer balance and variety. For now, that push has kept Rinku out, even though he has impressed in his short career.
