England picked their squad for the ODI and T 20 series against Australia

England has started a new phase in their white-ball cricket by leaving out Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali for their upcoming matches against Australia. Bairstow and Ali have played over 400 international games combined, but the experienced duo has been considered replaceable as England reshapes their limited overs team after underperforming in the ODI and T20 World Cups. Matthew Mott was removed as England’s limited overs head coach last month, and more changes were made with the squad announcement on Monday.

Five players who have never played for England before have been chosen for Marcus Trescothick’s first job as interim coach.

Left-arm fast bowler Josh Hull, all-rounder Jacob Bethell, and fast bowler John Turner were picked for both formats, while Dan Mousley and Jordan Cox were added to the T20 team. Moeen had been a key vice-captain to Jos Buttler but is now 37 and has accepted that his international career is coming to an end.

His teammates Bethell and Mousley from Warwickshire will take over his role as all-rounders who bowl spin. Bairstow is turning 35 next month, but it doesn’t seem like he’s planning to end his time with the England team.

He played a key part in the team’s success in the 50-over World Cup in 2019, helping them win by scoring important hundreds against India and New Zealand in crucial matches during that competition.

Even though Bairstow still has about 14 months left on the two-year contract he signed last October, he lost his spot in the Test team earlier this year after playing in his 100th game during the winter.

Chris Jordan was also removed from the team, while Liam Livingstone kept his spot in the T20 team but didn’t make it for the 50-over matches.

Durham player Brydon Carse, who finished a three-month ban for past betting violations on Wednesday, was chosen for the team. He hasn’t played in a competitive game since May 10 because of his suspension, but England’s selectors gave him a chance to come back right away.

Jofra Archer, who has only played in the Hundred since the T20 World Cup, kept his place in both squads.

The three-match T20 series against Australia begins at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton the day after England’s third and final Test against Sri Lanka ends. Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, and Matthew Potts will take a short break before joining Trescothick’s ODI team for the five-match series.
