England to Honor Graham Thorpe in Sri Lanka Test Series

Manchester, August 20, 2024 – England’s cricket team is set to pay tribute to one of its most beloved former players, Graham Thorpe, during the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford.

Thorpe, who tragically took his own life earlier this month, was a key figure in English cricket, known for his exceptional batting skills and later, his coaching contributions.

Before the start of play, players will observe a minute’s applause and wear black armbands in his memory.

Additionally, a tribute video will be displayed on the big screens, and Sky Sports commentators, many of whom were close to Thorpe, will also honour him during their broadcast.

Graham Thorpe’s Legacy in English Cricket

Graham Thorpe was a cornerstone of England’s batting lineup during his 100-match Test career, where he averaged an impressive 44.66.

Post-retirement, Thorpe continued to shape English cricket, serving as a batting coach and assistant coach.

He was instrumental in the careers of many current players, including Joe Root and Ben Stokes. Stokes, who wore a shirt bearing Thorpe’s name during his first Test as full-time captain, described him as a “great man” whose loss has deeply affected the team.

The Tribute at Old Trafford

The tribute to Thorpe will be a poignant moment before the start of play, with both teams lining up for a minute’s applause before the national anthems.

The event will be a moment of reflection not just for the players but for fans and commentators alike.

Thorpe’s influence extended far beyond the pitch, as reflected in the outpouring of tributes from former teammates and cricket fans.

The tribute will be broadcast live, allowing fans around the world to join in honouring Thorpe’s memory.
