Renowned England cricketer Sir Geoffrey Boycott has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer for the second time. Boycott, who is celebrated for his illustrious batting career, initially battled the same illness 22 years ago, in 2002. The England great is to have surgery at the age of 83 for cancer relapse.
During his first encounter with throat cancer, Boycott underwent extensive treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, to combat the disease. This recent diagnosis has once again brought him face-to-face with a significant health challenge, underscoring the resilience he has shown throughout his life, both on and off the field.
Sir Geoffrey Boycott to undergo surgery in 2 weeks
In a statement to The Telegraph, Sir Geoffrey stated that his throat cancer had made a relapse 22 years after he was declared free of it. Despite the treatments he went through, Boycott is set to have surgery at 83 for cancer relapse.
“In the last few weeks I have had an MRI scan, CT scan, a PET scan and two biopsies, and it has now been confirmed I have throat cancer and will require an operation.” Sir Boycott said.
“From past experience, I realise that to overcome cancer a second time, I will need excellent medical treatment and quite a bit of luck and, even if the operation is successful, every cancer patient knows they have to live with the possibility of it returning. So I will just get on with it and hope for the best,” he added.
The cricket legend had his cancer treated at 62
As a great English batter, who has also been given an honorary title, Sir Geoffrey Boycott has shown great resilience on and off the field. He got his cancer treated at 62 years of age, back in 2002.
During his first cancer diagnosis in 2002, Boycott underwent 35 chemotherapy sessions. The renowned batter has also been one of the best cricket commentators of his time, charming the audience with his no-nonsense manner of speaking.
Former Indian legend who’s battling cancer
While Geoffrey’s statement about his relapse saddened a lot of people, who are now wishing him a speedy recovery, another former legend is battling cancer.
Former Indian batsman and coach Anshuman Gaekwad, who coached legends like Sachin Tendulkar, has been undergoing cancer treatment at the King’s hospital, London.
Gaekwad’s treatment came into light again when recently Sandeep Patil congratulated team India and staff for their prize of 125 crores for winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Patil also urged the BCCI to help Anshuman Gaekwad pay for his life-saving treatment.
