SCORECARD

New rookie professional Jay Singh stood out with 4-39 from 11 overs as Yorkshire’s bowlers enjoyed a positive day one against Essex at Chelmsford today.

The final pre-season friendly, played across two days, sees Essex bat one day and Yorkshire the other.

Essex finished on 252-12 from 68.4 overs, with rain at 4.15pm bringing a premature end to proceedings.

Singh is tall and pacy, much like colleague Ben Cliff, who returned 3-56 from 13 overs added to two wickets for Ben Coad and one apiece for Dom Bess, George Hill and Dan Moriarty.

Essex opener Paul Walter top-scored with 34.

They were ‘bowled out’ for 190 in 48 overs before the recycling of batters started.

Ex-South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar, for example, batted twice, posting four and six.

Coad trapped him lbw stuck on the crease four balls into the contest before Singh – aged 19 – ousted him in similar fashion late in the day.

Captain Jonny Bairstow rotated eight bowlers against head coach Anthony McGrath’s former county.
