Essex Women’s Cricket Match Postponed Amid Far-Right Protest Threats

The women’s cricket match between Essex Women and Kent Women, originally scheduled for August 7 at the County Ground in Chelmsford, has been postponed due to threats of potential far-right violent protests in the area. This fixture, not part of the ongoing Women’s Twenty20 Cup or Women’s County One Day competition, has been rescheduled to ensure the safety of all involved.

Essex Cricket announced the decision after consulting with Essex Police, the ECB, and other stakeholders. The club emphasized that the safety of spectators, players, and staff is their top priority. Fans will be informed of the new date for the fixture, and ticket purchasers will receive additional information via email.

This postponement comes amid violent protests in various UK cities, with over 400 individuals arrested in the past week. The unrest began in Southport following a tragic mass stabbing at a dance class, leading to the deaths of three young girls. Social media posts suggest far-right groups might be planning further gatherings in Chelmsford and Southend.

The club’s statement reads: “In light of planned protests on Wednesday, 07 August, the fixture between Essex Women and Kent Women at The Cloud County Ground has been postponed. The safety of all spectators, players, and staff is paramount to Essex Cricket.”

Fans will be kept updated regarding the rescheduled match and can expect to be contacted by the club for further details.
