The whole Toronto–Montreal trade rumor fans are hearing about (the one involving Matthew Knies) is a distraction — a “red herring,” according to one former GM and current NHL analyst.
As per Brian Lawton, while media and fans are talking about the Canadiens’ interest in Knies, Lawton seems to be suggesting that everyone is focusing on the wrong thing.
Lawton’s remarks on social media come as a response to a report from Elliotte Friedman. Friedman noted, “In this deal that didn’t quite happen between Toronto and Montreal, which I still do believe was Knies even though everyone’s denying it, I don’t think [Michael] Hage was in the deal, I think a lot of people suspected he was because [Keith] Pelley mentioned his name.” Lawton posted, “That is interesting…… more of a red herring. The holdup in things was centered around……..center being the key word, a different trade that simply did not happen in time!”
Lawton teases the word “center” in his post, which in plain English seems to suggest that one side was waiting on or involved in another trade for a centerman that simply didn’t get done in time. Once that center deal died, the whole thing between the two teams collapsed, too.
Lawton is hinting that the Knies-to-Montreal talk (and the Michael Hage speculation) is just noise.
