Shubman Gill will not be able to play the first Test of the five-match series in Perth, as he faced a thumb fracture while fielding in the slips. Now since skipper Rohit Sharma and top-order batter Shubman Gill will not be there for the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Devdutt Padikkal will remain in Australia instead of returning home with India A squad.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the Indian team management decided to take this batter as a backup in collaboration with the national selectors.
Though Devdutt has not given out numbers that will define a call-up, as he has only scored 36, 88, 26, and 1 in an unofficial Test against Australia A, he was considered due to his experience with Australian conditions.
