The traditional St. Stephen’s Day fixture at Buccaneers RFC attracted the largest turnout of players in recent years with both teams being “over-subscribed” with players willing to participate on a chilly but dry afternoon at Dubarry Park.

A lively game of touch rugby unfolded, sensibly marshalled by referee Dermot Hallahan, and a strong President’s selection came unstuck against a keen and energetic Exiles outfit. One of the younger players Dylan Moran displayed a neat turn of pace to open the scoring with a try for Exiles before Fergal Lennon replied for the yellow jerseyed President’s side. Sean O’Hara restored the lead for the Exiles before a free-flowing move was finished off by Dylan Bolger, who was unlucky not to grab a hattrick, to give the Exiles a 15-5 lead at half-time.

Martin Staunton showed he has not lost any of his ability when adding to the Exiles tally following the change of ends before Scott Lowe’s intercept touchdown put the game beyond the President’s representatives. However, the losers scored the try of the match when Eoin Furey broke from his own half to race away for a super solo try that completed the 25-10 scoreline after a most entertaining tussle.

After the match, which featured female players for the first time in Chloe O’Connor and Norrie Ross, the Pat Hynes Exiles Perpetual Cup was presented to the victorious captain Sean O’Hara by Mrs. Peggy Hynes.
