The reports suggest SRH are willing to spend as much as INR 23 crores for Klaasen, their first retention.
A few reports from reliable sources suggest Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have identified Heinrich Klaasen as their top retention. Klaasen has been SRH’s leading run-scorer in the previous two editions, scoring 927 runs at an average of 44.14 and a 173.92 strike rate in 26 innings, including six fifties and a century.
No wonder SRH are ready to give a hefty sum to their premium batter who can keep the wickets. The reports suggest SRH are willing to spend as much as INR 23 crores for Klaasen, their first retention.
Now the question arises how can SRH give INR 23 crores to the South African player when the first retention is set at INR 18 crores according to the retention rules? According to the rules, the first retention gets INR 18 crores, the second gets INR 14 crores, and the third gets INR 11 crores.
However, it is not compulsory to give them an amount equal to the retention slab; teams can give more or less sum to the player at any retention slot. If a team retains all five capped players before the auction, they will have to spend INR 75 crores from their purse.
Hence, it’s up to the teams to decide how to spend INR 75 crores among their players. They can give INR 23 crores to their first retention and adjust the remaining 52 crores among the other four capped ones.

However, if they don’t give the amount equal to the retention slab, the amount equal to the retention slab will be deducted from the purse. Suppose, the first retention slab is set at INR 18 crores, but the teams only give INR 16 crores to their first retention then INR 18 crores will be deducted from the purse and not INR 16 crores.
But if a player’s fee is higher than the league’s fee, then that player’s fee will be cut from the team’s purse. The same will happen in Klaasen’s case.
While the league’s fee for the retention is set at INR 18 crores, SRH are retaining Klaasen at INR 23 crores as their first retention. Hence, INR 23 crores will be deducted from SRH’s purse and not INR 18 crores.
Sometimes, players demand a high amount to get retained due to their huge auction value, as in Klaasen’s case. Hence, teams get ready to pay the demanded sum in order to keep that player with them rather than letting him come into the auction.
Ultimately, it’s up to the teams to decide how to spend their purse, but the rules are there to ensure teams don’t get an advantage by deliberately reducing player fees. Ultimately, it’s fair for everyone involved.
