Fabian Schar personal statement to Newcastle United fans after having surgery

Fabian Schar was stretchered off the pitch eight days ago.

The Newcastle United defender picking up what looked a nasty injury against Leeds United, a negative on the night as Eddie Howe’s side won a thriller 4-3.

At the time, it was widely reported as likely to end his season, maybe even prove to be his very final moment in a black and white shirt, as Fabian Schar is set to see his current contract end on 30 June 2026.

On Friday morning ahead of the FA Cup game against Bournemouth, Eddie Howe had a bit of a more positive update on Fabian Schar: “Hopefully not too bad, or maybe not as bad as it initially looked. He has got an injury there but no break, it is ligament damage. He is seeing a specialist in the next coming days to get a definitive answer but maybe more positive than the initial assessment. Losing Fabian is a huge blow.”

Now on Thursday, the Swiss defender giving his own personal update, a brief statement via his own social media, with Fabian Schar declaring: “The prognosis is better than first feared… and most importantly, the surgery went well in London today!”

Great news from a player who is such a class act, on and off the pitch.

Fabian Schar grateful to the Newcastle United fans for their support: “Thank you for all the well wishes over the past few weeks – It means a lot!”

Now aged 34, the classy defender surely one of the greatest pound for pound signings in the club’s history.

Eight and a half years ago, Rafa Benitez played a blinder, hearing through his contacts in Spain that a relegation clause at Deportivo meant that Fabian Schar could be signed for only £3m!

Fabian Schar hopefully back before the end of the season and the player insisting: “I’ll be supporting the boys from the stands in the meantime and can’t wait to get back out there.”

Amongst the many reasons why he was not good enough to be Newcastle United manager, maybe the most damning of all was that Steve Bruce didn’t rate Fabian Schar. Bruce played the likes of Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez and even midfielder Isaac Hayden ahead of Schar at times.

Thankfully Steve Bruce sacked just in time and Fabian Schar staying on to do what he has done since, for Newcastle United.

Hopefully plenty more games for him to come with NUFC.
