In the ever-evolving world of esports, Africa is steadily carving its place on the global stage. But within this growth lies an even more powerful story; THE RISE OF WOMEN IN GAMING
At the heart of this movement is Faith Dorothy, an Ugandan gamer, software engineer, community builder, and founder of Gamer Girls Uganda (GGU), a safe space designed to empower female gamers in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
FROM ISOLATION TO COMMUNITY

Faith’s journey into gaming began at just five years old, but her real immersion into gaming communities came much later in life. Like many female gamers, her experience wasn’t easy.
Gaming communities, often known for their toxicity, can be even harsher for women. Faith faced cyberbullying and struggled to find a space where she truly belonged. Even when she found friendship among male gamers, something was still missing, understanding.
“You cannot share everything… they don’t have that perspective of being a female gamer.”
This sense of isolation sparked something powerful, a vision.
THE BIRTH OF GAMER GIRLS UGANDA

Faith’s turning point came during the Swahili Esports Champions 2023 in Kenya, where she represented Uganda. For the first time, she connected with other gamers across Africa who understood her journey.
That experience lit a fire.
She returned home with one mission:
To build a community where female gamers could thrive, connect, and grow.
Using her tournament winnings and sheer determination, she launched Gamer Girls Uganda, starting with an all-female tournament featuring popular titles like FIFA, Call of Duty Mobile, and Mortal Kombat.
With support from ATSU of Esports Africa News, what began as an idea quickly became a movement.
THE REALITY OF BUILDING A COMMUNITY/STARTUP
Creating a community is one thing, sustaining it is another.
Faith highlights a major challenge: consistency. With 90% of her members being students, participation fluctuates due to exams, holidays, and life responsibilities.
“Community managers are unsung heroes… it is very hard.”
Despite this, she continues to push forward, driven by purpose and belief.
CHANGING PERCEPTIONS OF ESPORTS IN AFRICA

One of Faith’s biggest missions goes beyond gaming, it’s about education and perception.
In many African communities, esports is still misunderstood, often confused with gambling or dismissed as a hobby. Through events like the Swahili Esports Champions 2026 in Kampala, Faith is actively reshaping that narrative.
From government officials to parents, many attendees were shocked to discover that:
- Gaming can be competitive
- Players can earn real money
- Esports can become a viable career
“I cannot blame people for not dreaming with me if I haven’t shown them what I have seen.”
LESSONS FROM HOSTING A MAJOR ESPORTS TOURNAMENT

Hosting an international esports event taught Faith some powerful lessons:
1. Community is Everything
When service providers failed, the community stepped in and saved the event.
2. Problem-Solving Over Complaints
Stakeholders don’t want problems, they want solutions.
3. Cultural Awareness Matters
Hosting international guests requires understanding and respecting cultural differences.
4. Rest is Not Optional
Burnout is real, and even leaders need to pause.
A MESSAGE TO YOUNG AFRICAN FEMALE GAMERS

Faith’s advice is simple, raw, and powerful:
“Just start. Show up.”
No one will hand you a seat at the table, you have to claim it.
She encourages young women to:
- Take initiative
- Seek communities
- Learn gaming skills
- Explore career paths within esports
And most importantly, believe in their place in the industry.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: AFRICA’S ESPORTS FUTURE

Faith’s story represents something bigger than one community in Uganda.
It reflects a continental shift:
- More women entering esports
- More grassroots communities forming
- More opportunities emerging
From Uganda to Nigeria, with initiatives like the Women in Esports Tournament (WET) in Lagos, Africa is witnessing a new wave of inclusive gaming.
