England got off to a flying start in the first match of the three-game ODI series, thrashing West Indies by a massive 238 runs to take a 1-0 lead. From the very first over, the hosts looked in complete control, delivering a dominant performance with both bat and ball. It was a tough day at the office for the visitors, who were thoroughly outplayed in all three departments.

For a side that has already faced a rough patch in ODIs over the last couple of years, this loss adds further concerns. With ODI World Cup 2027 on the line West Indies have to do some serious work. The team needs to regroup, identify the gaps in both strategy and execution, and bounce back quickly if they hope to stay competitive in the series—and in the long run.

England’s masterclass with the bat

Batting first, the hosts delivered a scintillating batting performance, with four of their players smashing quickfire half-centuries. The standout performer was Player of the match, Jacob Bethell, who lit up the innings with a blistering 82 off just 53 balls, setting the tone for England to reach the imposing total of 400/8. Supporting acts came from Ben Duckett and skipper Harry Brook, both of whom played aggressive cameos, scoring fifties at strike rates over 125.

West Indies’ bowlers had no answers to England’s onslaught. Except for Gudakesh Motie, every bowler conceded runs at an economy rate of over six. Jayden Seales managed to pick up four wickets, while Alzarri Joseph chipped in with two, but it did little to stem the flow of runs.

Windies batting falters under pressure

Chasing a mammoth target for victory, the visitors looked completely out of sorts. None of the batters managed to score a half-century, with the highest individual score coming from number 11, Jayden, who remained unbeaten on 29. Apart from that, only Keacy Carty and skipper Shai Hope showed some resistance, scoring 22 and 25 runs respectively.

Meanwhile, England’s bowlers were right on the money, with every bowler contributing with wickets. Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton led the way, picking up three wickets each. Their disciplined and accurate bowling never allowed the West Indies batters to settle, playing a key role in securing a massive win for their side.
