The line-up for the Ireland Six Nations 2026 squad’s first match of this year’s tournament has an unfamiliar feel, as injuries force head coach Andy Farrell’s hand.
Ireland kick off their campaign against France in Paris on Thursday night, but have to do so without (among others) British & Irish Lions stars Tadhg Furlong, Mack Hansen, Hugo Keenan and Andrew Porter. Another Lion and Farrell regular, Bundee Aki, has been dropped for disciplinary reasons, while wing James Lowe (out of form for Leinster) has been left out of the matchday squad entirely.
In the backs, Jamie Osborne is picked at full-back, with Tommy O’Brien and Jacob Stockdale alongside him on the wings. Stuart McCloskey partners Garry Ringrose in the centres, behind a half-back partnership of Sam Prendergast and Jamison Gibson-Park.
Up front, hooker Dan Sheehan lines up alongside comparatively inexperienced props Jeremy Loughman and Thomas Clarkson. There’s an all Lions second row of Joe McCarthy and Tadhg Beirne, while the back row comprises Cian Prendergast, Josh van der Flier and Caelan Doris. Doris also skippers the side.
Farrell has opted for a 6-2 split on the replacements bench, with Rónan Kelleher, Michael Milne, Finlay Bealham, James Ryan, Jack Conan, Nick Timoney, Craig Casey and Jack Crowley all poised to enter the fray.
“I’ve been pleased with the application of the squad since we linked up last week and we’ve a good body of work under our belts from our training camp in Portugal as we face into an exciting test match against France,” said Farrell. “The Six Nations is an amazing tournament to compete in and it brings out the best in players.
“We have played at the Stade de France many times and it’s a terrific stadium with an incredible atmosphere. We know from our experiences on the road how proud and vocal the travelling Irish support can be and it’s a huge motivator for the squad knowing that we have so many Irish supporters behind us.”
France v Ireland kicks off at 8.10pm GMT on Thursday 5 February, with live coverage on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK, and Virgin Media One and Virgin Media Play in Ireland.
