We take a look at the favourites to become new Port Vale manager as Darren Moore speaks on being sacked by the club.
The Valiants parted company with Moore, who said we would not quit, following a 5-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town.
It leaves them bottom of League One, ten points from safety, with the club thanking Moore for securing promotion from League Two in his first season (2024-25) but said a change was needed for the team’s long-term interests.

>h4>CLUB STATEMENT:
We can confirm that Port Vale Football Club have parted company with first-team manager Darren Moore.
This has been a difficult decision and one we haven’t taken lightly, but we believe now is the right moment to make a change. We have given the situation time and support to ensure we were doing everything to give this project the best possible chance of success, and while we truly hoped it would turn, we must act in what we believe is the best long-term interest of Port Vale.
We fully understand the frustration and disappointment around results, which has been felt by supporters and throughout the club. As we approach the halfway point of the season, we believe this decision will give the team the best possible chance of moving in the right direction during the second half of the campaign, and we will now take the necessary steps to move the club forward and rebuild momentum.
Darren worked extremely hard during his time at Vale Park and played a key role in guiding the club back to League One at the first time of asking, an achievement for which he will always be respected and thanked. We would like to place on record our thanks to Darren for his commitment and hard work and wish him the very best for the future.
Darren Moore said: “It has been a real privilege to manage Port Vale and to represent such a proud football club. Earning promotion in our first season gave me memories that I will always keep in my heart, and I want to thank the players, staff and supporters for their backing during my time at Vale Park. You have all been outstanding to work with. While I’m sorry things haven’t worked out the way we all would have hoped this season, I hope everyone connected to the club knows that I gave my very best and I wish the club nothing but success for the future. I will be supporting you from afar.”
The club will now undertake a full recruitment process and further updates regarding the management of the first team will be communicated in due course.
Lead First-Team Coach, Jamie Smith, will take the team Monday night against Bradford City.

Here’s how fans reacted amid the favourites to become new Port Vale manager as Darren Moore speaks on being sacked…
@EmilyCherryCEO: Thankyou DM for the promotion, wishing you all the best. Right decision by the club – it wasn’t working. Let’s get behind the players (in their right positions) and keep everything crossed for the great Vale escape. Keep the Faith 🤍🖤
@JayPVFC: Well done Carol, you’ve finally done what should have been done well over a month ago. Massive job now to save our season
@TerrierNigel: The Erminator is no moore!! Congratulations to all vale fans you can now look forwards to getting someone in who at least makes a bit of sense 👍🏼
@whitehurstjack3: I thank him for his effort in helping us get back to league 1 but unfortunately he just wasn’t cutting it at this level, massive decision to be made now in who takes us forward…
@Low_SZN: #htafc You’re all welcome for this btw, after what he did to us couldn’t stand seeing him do it to another club!
@Vernonsdave: A classy statement . He obviously had to go. Really wish he had succeeded as I think he meant well. However this season was just a disaster from the second he picked that wacko team at Rotherham . Not sure he will get another job
@PvfcTom789: Glad she finally made the right decision however unfortunately the point is still
The same it’s way too late most likely and should’ve been made over a month ago and was only kept in the job because of his friendship with Carol. And I don’t see us making the right appointment going forward and she’ll end up making the same mistakes in not being ruthless enough as a club and ignoring fans views
@valiantchicken: Personally I think the interviews with Dan n Phil did him.. u can’t be so disrespectful n so pigheaded to people who love the club n have a right to ask questions.. a month to late.he should have gone after Plymouth but at least Carol has done the right thing n gives us half a chance of putting things right with the fans. interesting times n a step in the right direction..also some of our players need take a fuckin long hard look at themselves too as they clearly downed tools n if I did that cuz my boss was just shit id be out of a job n all.. utv 🖤🤍
@jonty_shaw: As supporters we want to see entertaining football! I believe we have the players to keep us up in league 1 but the shackles need to be released! The goal now should be to be brave and ambitious! A manager who plays high- intensity, attacking please! Alarm bells ring out very loudly following the statement issued! 1. This has been a difficult decision and one we haven’t taken lightly? 2. We believe now is the right moment to make a change? Many points to dissect for the lads. 3. We have given the situation time and support….We truly hoped it would turn? Firstly, it demonstrates loud and clear that when it comes to matters on the pitch, our leadership is clueless! Secondly, it’s obvious to me that they have dragged their feet in the ‘hope’ that it would turn around! Showing a worrying lack of accountability! 4. As we approach the halfway point of the season, we believe this decision will give the team the best possible chance of moving in the right direction! Thirdly, it demonstrates the leadership had no strategic plan based on how this scenario would pan out! It’s obvious that the club have created an ‘echo chamber’ for the manager! Much to dissect here but we clearly need an experienced director of football in place. Given the astounding statement put out by @OfficialPVFC I am very worried about the future when it comes to our no.1 goal of matters on the pitch! In dissecting the statement, I would suggest major changes are required to to the clubs structure, processes & culture
@AshL2T: Christmas was on the 25th lads 🎅 In all seriousness, I can see what they planned, but after the Stockport game we could see it wasn’t working, and the hole has been dug further deep. Not impossible, but going be very difficult. Appoint the correct man 👀 – Jon Brady #pvfc
@PaulHitchen2010: Without the amount of fan pressure over the last few weeks would Moore still be in a job? It seemed they were adamant to keep him but with people threatening to stay away and views coming across via Bowers and our Media team, did that sway their decision? #pvfc
@OffTheLineBlog: Good guy, but right decision. Darren Moore’s success has been built on teams with an individualistic edge. One or two players that are better than the level they are at responsible as match-winners. As they stepped up, they didn’t have that in League One. Big call next.
@edward_w97: Key thing for Vale now is a sensible next appointment, as well as positive January reinforces. 10 from safety with 25 to play. As someone with a lot of first hand experience of it, that’s certainly doable…
