Ferrari boost as ADUO engine rule could be introduced earlier in 2026 F1

Ferrari could soon gain an important opportunity to work on its power unit development, thanks to the anticipated early introduction of the ADUO regulation in Formula 1.

A significant update has emerged regarding the engine situation in F1: the ADUO mechanism could be brought forward by a few races. This solution would allow all engine manufacturers—particularly those currently trailing Mercedes—to intervene earlier on their power units, not only for the 2026 season but also with an eye on future development.

A regulation designed to reduce performance gaps

This solution, introduced by the FIA to avoid significant performance imbalances, would allow teams to make substantial changes to their engines in an effort to close the gap to the current benchmark. At present, that benchmark is clearly represented by the Mercedes power unit, which has demonstrated a considerable advantage over its rivals in the opening races—particularly in direct battles with Ferrari.

However, this development could play directly into Ferrari’s hands, as the ADUO introduction is now expected to be brought forward by several races.

What is happening behind the scenes

According to reports from Motorsport-Magazin, the decision to anticipate the ADUO introduction is closely linked to recent changes in the Formula 1 calendar. The cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, have forced the FIA to reconsider several regulatory timelines.

Initially, the ADUO system was scheduled to be introduced at the sixth race of the season, which originally corresponded to the Miami Grand Prix. However, with Bahrain and Saudi Arabia removed from the calendar, Miami is now the fourth round of the championship, while the sixth race has shifted to the Monaco Grand Prix on June 7.

FIA pushing for an earlier decision

The FIA is keen to avoid delaying the matter, as doing so would limit teams’ ability to respond to the current performance gaps. For this reason, the governing body is reportedly considering proposing to the teams that the ADUO introduction should still take place at the Miami Grand Prix—effectively bringing it forward by two races.

This decision will ultimately require approval from the teams themselves. At this stage, unanimity is not necessary: a majority vote from the other four engine manufacturers against Mercedes would be sufficient to pass the proposal and implement the earlier introduction.

Potential advantage for Ferrari

How the situation will evolve remains to be seen, but the potential benefits for Ferrari are clear. An earlier ADUO introduction would reduce the number of races in which the Italian team is forced to run with a possible performance deficit compared to Mercedes.

More importantly, it would allow Ferrari engineers to begin working on their power unit upgrades sooner, accelerating their efforts to close the gap. This advantage, however, will only materialize if the team meets the required thresholds set by the regulation to trigger the permitted changes.

In a tightly contested championship, even a small shift in timing could have a major impact—and Ferrari will be watching developments around the ADUO rule very closely.
