Ferrari completes 423 laps in Bahrain, though McLaren and Williams are right behind with 422.
In all honesty, the ongoing claims that “they’re fastest”, “no, they’re fastest” following the opening Bahrain test, is pretty much like a perverse, “he’s Spartacus!, “No, he’s Spartacus!”
It’s almost as if everyone is embarrassed by their form, not that it has anything to do with the ongoing row over engine legality of course.
Pace, we can forget about for now, but in terms of reliability Ferrari looks very good, as do McLaren and Williams.
Mercedes ended the test with the two best times, but the fact that only Aston Martin completed fewer laps must be a concern, then again, thinking smoke and mirrors, that engine legality row could be playing a part.
In terms of engines, as it supplies four teams it is natural that the Three-Pointed Star leads the way, ahead of Ferrari and Red Bull.
Of greatest concern however has to be Aston Martin and Honda, where things have got off to the worst possible start. Only poor old Kimi Antonelli has completed fewer laps than Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, but other than his pace on Friday the Italian teenager can console himself with the fact that teammate George Russell completed the tenth most laps.
Whie we are beginning to see a basic pecking order emerge in terms of reliability, it is going to be interesting to see how that might change when the pace is upped.
