FIA announces Ferrari Driver Academy member as surprising choice for rookie of the year

The FIA elects the rookie of the year: the name is unexpected

After several lean years with very few newcomers, the 2025 Formula 1 grid finally featured a crowded group of debutants. Oliver Bearman, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar were the fresh faces joining the championship, alongside Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto, who were still considered “rookies” despite having already contested several races. Each of them needed a bit of time to find their rhythm, but once they gained confidence they delivered impressive performances, including several podium finishes. Of course, alongside the highs there were also tough moments and difficulties, yet overall they proved that the future of Formula 1 is in good hands.

However, the FIA decided that the true rookie of the year was someone else entirely: Rafael Camara, the newest Formula 3 champion. The Brazilian driver has been racing in Europe for several years thanks in part to the support of the Ferrari Driver Academy. After winning FRECA in 2024, he stepped up to Formula 3, where he claimed excellent results and ultimately secured the most coveted award. “I wasn’t expecting it. It was a great season for me and I can’t wait for the next one,” he said in a recorded video, as he was unable to attend the gala in person.

His rapid progression will continue over the coming months, as he is set to begin his Formula 2 campaign with Invicta, taking the seat of Leonardo Fornaroli. Even Fornaroli, despite an impressive racing résumé, came away empty-handed when the FIA announced the winner.
