Flash Flood warning in effect for Barbados

A flash flood warning is currently in effect for Barbados as heavy rainfall is expected to impact the island.

Surface to low-level instability is forecast to produce rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 mm). This level of rainfall could result in significant flooding across various regions.

Authorities warn that the heavy rainfall could lead to runoff from higher elevations, which may cause soil erosion and land slippage, especially on exposed or previously scarred land. Roads and fields are likely to experience water settlements, and water bodies such as ponds may see changes in their levels.

There is also a risk of large debris being carried by fast-moving water from higher areas. This could pose serious hazards and potentially worsen flooding conditions. Areas at the foot of hillsides and along coastal roads are particularly vulnerable and may become flooded.

The warning states that traffic delays are anticipated, with some routes becoming impassable or cut off, especially in and out of smaller towns. Residents should prepare for potential detours and difficult driving conditions.

The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) is urging the public to stay informed by following updates from BMS, DEM, and the Government Information Service (GIS) through their websites and social media channels.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) issued the warning at 9:10 a.m. today, Monday, November 11 and will be updated at 6:00 p.m. or earlier if necessary.
