The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a flood watch as a tropical wave affects the island, bringing potentially significant weather conditions.
Residents and visitors should be aware that cloudy skies and possible thunderstorms are expected as the tropical wave moves over Barbados.
Rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches from moderate to heavy showers could lead to flooding in vulnerable areas.
It is important to note that a flood watch indicates favourable conditions for flooding within the next 48 hours, though it does not confirm that flooding will occur.
Under this flood watch, the following moderate to significant impacts are possible, run off from higher elevations. Soil erosion on exposed or scarred land surfaces.
Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads. Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.). Objects or debris from higher elevations become embedded within fast-moving water flows. Delays on traffic routes with some roads becoming impassable
Residents are advised to stay alert, particularly those in low-lying or flood-prone areas, and be mindful that the alert level could be elevated to red if conditions worsen. Monitoring updates and being prepared for swift changes in weather conditions is essential for safety.
This flood watch will be updated or terminated at 6:00 p.m. today, or sooner if necessary. (BMS)
