Former Arsenal midfielder Ramsey confirms retirement

Aaron Ramsey has called time on his playing career.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who made 369 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions, has been without a club since he left Mexican club Pumas UNAM last year.

Ramsey was left out of Wales’ squad for last month’s World Cup qualifying play-off, which Craig Bellamy’s team lost on penalties to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

And the 35-year-old has now confirmed his retirement.

“This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football,” he wrote on social media.

“Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.

“To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows, and you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through everything together and it’s been an honour to represent you. Diolch.

“Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for. Thank you to all the managers and staff who have helped me be able to live my dream and play at the highest level.

“And a huge thank you to my wife and children and all my family. Without you by my side throughout, none of this would have been possible.”

Ramsey made 86 appearances for Wales, scoring 21 goals for his country.

He scored 64 times and provided 57 assists for Arsenal, where he spent 11 years between 2008 and 2019.

Ramsey joined Juventus after leaving the Gunners, but failed to find his best form in Serie A.

Having spent time on loan at Rangers in 2022, Ramsey had a season at Nice in Ligue 1, and then returned to boyhood club Cardiff City for two years, taking charge of three games at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

He then headed to Pumas, but mutually terminated his contract with the club in October.
