Former Bangladesh cricketer Nafees Iqbal is currently at a Dhaka hospital under observation after having a brain haemorrhage in Chattogram yesterday. The brother of one of the country’s leading cricketers, Tamim Iqbal, was airlifted to Dhaka in the afternoon and is currently in the High Dependency Unit of a hospital.
Before the incident, Nafees had been suffering from severe headaches for the past few days. Returning from the T20 World Cup as the logistical manager for Bangladesh, Nafees’s condition got only worse, and he was immediately transferred to a hospital. The team of doctors, headed by Debashis Chowdhury at the Bangladesh Cricket Board, informed that Nafees is out of danger but has cerebral venous thrombosis, where the blood in one of the veins going to the brain has clotted.
Although Nafees has a very critical condition, he is stable, and most of his health parameters are good. He is under close observation and may, if stable, be transferred to the general ward in a day or two. Expect full recovery for about a few weeks.
The community of cricket is with Nafees. BCB director Jalal Yunus, chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury, and several players, including Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mashrafe Mortaza, also visited him in the hospital. Nafees has been handling the job of Bangladesh team manager for the last two years and is also the nephew of former Bangladesh captain and current BCB director Akram Khan.
Nafees Iqbal played 11 Tests and 16 ODIs for Bangladesh between 2003 and 2006. In first-class cricket, he is a colossus with 120 matches for the Chattogram division. The cricketing world prays for his early and complete recovery.
