Former Dolphins $12 Million Talent Signs With Division Rival

The Miami Dolphins have lost an array of talent this offseason. While some moves were made due to financial reasons, like the release of Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb, others were made because the team preferred to seek alternatives at the position. The latter was the case for former Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was benched during the 2025 season and Miami’s owner Stephen Ross reportedly no longer wanted him to be a part of the team moving forward.

Tagovailoa’s release actually cost the team money, as they would have saved $11 million had he remained on the roster, even if it were as a backup. Then, there was the case of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who the team did not move for financial reasons or because they wanted him gone. He was a case of another team making an offer that the Dolphins valued over having the fast wide receiver.

This offseason put an end to the Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle receiving duo that, aside from being the fastest receiving pair in the NFL, were also among the most productive. Prior to Hill joining the Dolphins, the team’s most productive season by a receiver duo came from Mark Clayton and Mark Duper in 1984 with 2,695 receiving yards. Hill and Waddle surpassed that number twice.

Their best season together came in 2022, when the duo totaled over 3,000 receiving yards. Now, the third receiver on that Dolphins team’s depth chart has joined an AFC East rival.

Former Miami Dolphins Receiver Signs With Bills

The Buffalo Bills announced that they had signed former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Trent Sherfield to a one-year contract.

As previously mentioned, Sherfield was a part of the 2022 Dolphins, where he had the best receiving season of his career, totaling 417 receiving yards and cementing himself as the team’s best run blocker at the position. He signed with Miami prior to the season as former head coach Mike McDaniel brought him over from San Francisco because he was already familiar with the offense.

His highlight with the Dolphins came when he scored a 75-yard touchdown to open the game against the 49ers. Dolphins fans are likely familiar with the play as some have suggested it was the peak of the Dolphins era under Mike McDaniel, one fan on X said of the play, “I thought we were Super Bowl bound.”

Trent Sherfield’s History

Following his season with the Dolphins, Sherfield joined the Buffalo Bills, a team he will now rejoin. At that time, Sherfield made headlines with his first comments after signing in Buffalo as he seemed to take a shot at former Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, saying, “If you want to be an elite receiver, come and play with an elite quarterback.”

Sherfield has bounced around the NFL since then, where he has been on seven teams during his eight-year career, where he has totaled over $12 million in career earnings, according to Spotrac. He was most recently a member of the New England Patriots; however, he was not activated off their practice squad and did not see the field during the team’s Super Bowl.
