Former India coach reveals India star’s unique approach to get over slump before BGT

During the recent home season, he struggled to perform with the bat.

India Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma has been going through a lean patch, which spells caution for both the batter and the team ahead of the upcoming five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

During the recent home season where India played five Tests against Bangladesh (2 Tests) and New Zealand (3 Tests), Rohit struggled to perform with the bat.

Against Bangladesh, Rohit could manage only 42 runs at a paltry average of 10.50. In the following Test series against the Kiwis, the 37-year-old scored 91 runs across all six innings, bettering his average slightly at 15.16.

Speaking on the same lines, former India fielding coach R Sridhar revealed Rohit’s strategy that he is likely to implement to get over his slump before the high-octane BGT series kicks off.

Sridhar reminisced about the 2021 England tour, highlighting how Rohit Sharma put in significant effort to refine his red-ball technique while in Durham.

Sridhar reveals Rohit Sharma’s approach to get over slump

Sridhar noted that ahead of the upcoming BGT, Rohit is likely to review and scrutinise his previous dismissals and recent performances. He expects Rohit to focus on spending more time at the crease rather than playing with an aggressive approach.

Speaking to Revsportz, Sridhar said, “During that 15-day camp in Durham, I remember feeding a lots of balls to him, having multiple sessions a day trying to work on his technique and having conversations with then batting coach Vikram Rathour and then Ravi (Shastri) bhai and he was a success on that tour. He was a revelation, the way he batted, it was million dollars”.

“I’m sure Rohit has got time now. He is going to spend time reflecting on his Indian summer or the last 10 innings. He is going to come up with a plan. He has got enough experience. He is a very smart bloke, shrewd cricketing brain,” Sridhar added.
