Former Netherlands captain and Kolkata Knight Riders stalwart Ryan Ten Doeschate has joined the Indian cricket team’s coaching staff as an assistant coach. He will be working alongside Gautam Gambhir, who recently took over as the head coach of the Indian team.
Ten Doeschate’s appointment comes ahead of India’s tour of Sri Lanka, where they will play three T20Is and three ODIs. The first T20I is scheduled for July 27th.
Gambhir’s Coaching Staff Takes Shape
Gautam Gambhir, who previously worked with Ten Doeschate during their KKR days, has brought in Abhishek Nayar as another assistant coach. The former Indian cricketer is expected to focus on batting and fielding, while Ten Doeschate’s expertise will be utilized in other areas.
There has been speculation about a potential split coaching model for India, with Ten Doeschate focusing on white-ball cricket and Nayar on the Test format. However, Gambhir clarified that the final structure of the coaching staff will be determined after the Sri Lanka tour.
As a former player, Ten Doeschate brings a wealth of experience to the Indian team. Known for his exceptional batting skills, he averaged 67 in ODIs and 41 in T20Is for the Netherlands. His time with the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he worked closely with Gambhir, will be invaluable in his new role.
India’s New Coaching Era Begins
Gautam Gambhir, in his first press conference as India’s head coach earlier this week, expressed his satisfaction with the BCCI’s support for his coaching staff. He emphasized the importance of having multiple assistant coaches to cover different aspects of the game.
“I personally feel there can be assistant coaches who can probably involve themselves more in all three departments rather than just focusing on one, and that is the reason why now we have two assistant coaches as well,” Gambhir said.
The Indian team has already arrived in Sri Lanka and will play the first T20I against the hosts on July 27th. Ten Doeschate’s early arrival provides him with an opportunity to acclimatize and work closely with the players before the series begins.
The tour will also include a three-match ODI series starting on August 2nd.
